Everything we know so far about Star Wars Battlefront 2 including release date, setting and single-player

EA Games has already confirmed it is making a sequel to 2015’s Star Wars Battlefront, and over the past few months more and more details about the project emerged like teeny Jawas from the dunes of Tatooine.

We’re massive Star Wars fans at Digital Spy, so we’ll be collating everything we know about Star Wars Battlefront 2 here as and when we hear it.

How many Star Wars games are we really getting?

It’s going to be a great few years for Star Wars fans. Not only are we getting a new movie every year or two, but we’re also going to get a brand new Star Wars video game from EA thanks to that rather lucrative Disney deal.

EA’s Chief Financial Officer Blake Jorgensen confirmed as much during the company’s earning call back in March.

“We’ll most likely have one Star Wars title a year for the next three to four years,” he said during the call.

We already know that we’re getting a Star Wars game from Visceral Games sometime in 2018, with Amy Hennig (of Uncharted) taking the role of Creative Director. It’ll supposedly be a third-person action game.

But we’re also getting another Star Wars action game from Respawn games, which is being described as an “all-new third-person action adventure game set in the Star Wars universe”.

“With a new team led by Stig Asmussen, we get to see what they can do when you combine that great attention to gameplay with the power of Star Wars,” added EA.

But here, we’re all about Star Wars Battlefront 2, so let’s see what we know so far:

Star Wars Battlefront 2 release date: When is it coming out?

Star Wars Battlefront for Xbox One, PS4 and PC

Although there’s no concrete release date for Star Wars Battlefront 2, EA has stated it will be coming out in fiscal year 2018. That runs from April 2017 to March 2018, but we’d put money on it arriving sometime around October this year.

The game has yet to be revealed, but there will be opportunities at the usual junctures (E3, Star Wars Day) as well as the Star Wars Celebration in Orlando on April 13. EA will be in attendance and informing the audience about its future plans.

The last game was teased over several years, first at E3 2013, then fully announced at E3 2014, and then finally given a release date in April 2015. Eventually it launched in November 2015..

Star Wars Battlefront 2 setting: What will I be playing?

Star Wars Battlefront 2

According to EA, Star Wars Battlefront 2 will feature “bigger and better worlds” than the last game.

“Next year we’ll see Star Wars Battlefront back with bigger and better worlds, because we now have the new movies to work off [and] not just the historical movies that we used before,” said EA Games CFO, Blake Jorgensen.

The last Battlefront title only featured content from the original Star Wars trilogy, so it seems that we could see content from both The Force Awakens and Rogue One included in the next one.

We’ve not had any location details from EA or DICE yet, but there is the sreengrab we took from the EA Play event at E3 2016, which looks rather like Mustafar although that’s only guess work.

Star Wars Battlefront 2 characters: Who will make an appearance?

Star Wars Battlefront 2

Battlefront 2 will feature content from “multiple Star Wars eras”. Taken at face value, this means that Darth Maul could come face to face with Rey.

The “Heroes and Villains” you could play as in Battlefront were as follows:

  • Luke Skywalker
  • Darth Vader
  • Princess Leia Organa
  • Emperor Palpatine
  • Han Solo
  • Boba Fett
  • Nien Nunb
  • Greedo

We’ve yet to have any confirmation from EA on the Heroes and Villains that will be making an appearance in the next game, but our predictions would be:

  • Rey
  • Finn
  • Kylo Ren
  • Poe Dameron
  • Jyn Erso
  • Cassian Andor

Star Wars Battlefront 2 campaign: Will there be a single-player?

Star Wars Visceral

The biggest downfall for Star Wars Battlefront was the lack of single-player campaign and many will hope that that will be something featured in the next game.

EA has now confirmed in an earnings call that Battlefront 2 won’t make the same mistake, and will ship with a single-player campaign. Huzzah!
